5 steps to defining your creative purpose (and a free template to help you)
Do you struggle to get crystal clear on your creative purpose in life? Are you out-of-tune with your super-powers and how you can harness them to make a big impact on the world? We’ve all been there.
Let me guess: you live a busy life. Am I right? It’s not always easy to carve out space and time to focus on ourselves. Maybe you don’t feel ready, maybe your to-do list/family/work life are all competing for your time. I know. I’ve been there too.
Maybe you’re working a 9-5 and are figuring out how you can turn your passion into profit. Maybe you already know what your super-powers are but you haven’t thought about how that could translate into a beautiful brand and profitable business. Maybe you’ve already started the process but something doesn’t feel right and you need to take a step back and just check back in with yourself?
I had a real lightbulb moment when I first made a life plan: it was a revelation and I’m pretty sure you will find it an amazing investment in yourself too. You are definitely worth it. I’ll show you how getting crystal clear on where you are going can make the difference between good and great. Even if you don’t think you are ready, I think you are!
STEP 1: Let go of what’s holding you back
Whatever stage you’re at, fear, overwhelm and self-doubt can easily get in the way of us achieving our goals, don’t you agree? It can be crippling. It is always unpredictable and it can often send us into paralysis.
Have you ever shelved a project because you don’t think you’re good enough, or worthy enough? Or maybe you’ve seen someone do something so brilliantly that it’s put you off because you don’t think you could ever be as good as them (hello, social media comparisons).
I’m sure we’ve all been there. But I promise you, those people who have already achieved success are no different from you. They have worked through all the same fears, emotions and doubts. The difference is often that they’ve had a clear focus and learned to work with their doubt to achieve their goals. I know that we are all so more capable than we often think we are.
In twenty years in the creative industries I have worked with thousand of writers, designers, stylists, photographers, strategists, marketers, makers, crafters and brand builders. In my content agency I worked alongside lots of small, independent creative businesses at all stages. I know from experience that there is one clear truth: Success mostly comes from people who are crystal clear about their mission, purpose and audiences. They also cope better with self-doubt and learn to work with it.
I really believe this creative purpose and mission is your secret weapon in overcoming negativity.
Because when you have a compass to guide you, you can check back in with it and make sure you are going in the right direction. It’s with you every step of the way, giving you focus and confidence.
For me, it’s always the thing I reach for first when fear or social media paralysis creeps in. I know I need to check back in on myself and allow myself to read my personal compass and mission and say to myself: “It’s OK, you can do this. You have a clear mission. You are so very capable of achieving it.”
At this point I always go back to my own personal mantra: dream big, plan smart and work with heart to achieve it. Sometimes I go for a run, or play with my kids, or listen to a podcast too. And when I do a combination of those things, I usually find I can move past the negativity and work more productively than ever towards my goals.
STEP 2: Give yourself permission
I know, this sounds simple right? But the truth is that many people don’t get past this first step.Do you think you are worth investing in? I’m sure that’s a yes. I know that you are; I truly believe we all deserve to have the creative lives that we desire.
Make a commitment to yourself to spend 1-2 hours this week to focus on you. Mark out the time in your diary. Make yourself accountable by bringing in a friend to do it with if it helps. Do it in the bath, put your favourite music on over a glass of wine or take yourself to your favourite cafe to make it feel like a treat.
STEP 3: Download my workbook: Finding Your North Star
This workbook is short but asks powerful questions to encourage you to self-reflect, to work out your super powers (we all have them), your beliefs and your mission on this planet. If you are wondering if it’s for you, I wrote this for you if:
- You are in the very early stages of transforming your creative life (like working out what your new business could be).
- You have a 9-5 but are looking to set up a side project or to take the leap towards your own business.
- You already have a creative business but are looking to change it/add in new revenue streams/pivot direction and make it wok better for you.

STEP 4: Dig deep and enjoy the process.
To get the most out of this you need to think bigger picture and detail. It’s a short but powerful deep dive into who you really are, what fulfils you and what makes you tick. The deeper you can go into this, the better your creative business, brand or project will represent who you really are, as a creative and as a human. Sound good?
In the workbook we cover your biggest dreams, your hopes, your beliefs and more. Let’s reflect on your super-powers, your passions, where your creative heart lies.
Enjoy it, come back to it as often as you need. The process is designed for you to focus on what makes you the amazing, talented and creative human that I know you are. For you to feel great, positive and energised and for you to realise there is a space for you and your future business out there.
Step 5: The start of a new chapter
The main take away here is that you will finish the book with a clear idea of who you are, and what your purpose looks like going forward. It will get your creative juices flowing and open your mind to what you can make happen in the future.
Many people who download this workbook go on to write up a brand or business plan, planning out their new creative business in detail. But whatever project you want to get started on, feel intentional that this is the first – and most important step. Because whatever you do next has this at it’s foundation. A strong core, a mission and a strong vision of who you are, your what and your why.
It’s a big and exciting step and I’m with you all the way. Feel free to share this with your friends and use #palmcreativetribe so I can see what you do!
I’m always on your team,
